7 Surprising Reasons Why Parents Struggle To Stick To Boundaries

Realistic parenting strategies for setting healthy boundaries with children.

Have you ever set a rule with complete confidence, only to give in later and end up annoyed with everyone — including yourself?

Setting parenting boundaries sounds simple… until real life arrives.

I once said we’d have no more snacks before dinner. Feeling like a boundary-setting genius, I stood strong — until 4:45pm arrived, everyone was grumpy, dinner was nowhere near ready and I handed out crisps just for some peace.

The next day:
“Can I have a snack now? Can I? Can I? Pleaseeeeeee. You let me yesterday!”

And suddenly:

  • Resentment
  • Frustration
  • Feeling ignored

But the truth was simple: I broke the boundary — not them.

Most parents find holding boundaries incredibly difficult, and understanding why can help us make change without guilt or chaos.

7 Reasons Why Parents Struggle To Stick To Boundaries

7 Reasons Parents Find It Hard to Maintain Boundaries

1. We Want Our Children to Be Happy

No parent enjoys watching their child struggle or feel upset. Seeing tears, groans, or disappointment activates our stress response, pushing us to fix things quickly. It’s natural to want to ease their discomfort.

But when we give in, we undermine our own boundaries and create a cycle of frustration.

Quick Example

You say everyone needs to clean up after dinner before screens.
Cue groaning, dramatic flopping on chairs, and complaints of “It’s not fair!”

Your stomach tightens, you feel like the bad guy, and within seconds you say, “Fine, I’ll just do it.”
Instant peace — long-term resentment.

Why This Matters

Always giving in to avoid upset can unintentionally signal to children that they’re not capable of meeting expectations — and that we don’t have faith in their abilities.

When boundaries are held, children learn to manage disappointment, take responsibility for their actions, and develop confidence in their own capability.

Boundaries also teach children to respect others. When they experience consistent, fair boundaries at home, they’re more likely to respect the boundaries of friends, siblings, teachers, and others — building empathy and stronger relationships.

2. The Whining and Tantrums Are Draining

Gentle parenting boundaries sound calm on paper, but in real life, children often struggle to manage disappointment or frustration. Strong emotions can feel overwhelming — not because your child is “being difficult,” but because they don’t yet have the skills to handle their needs or desires within the boundaries you set.

Quick Example

You say no to sweets at the supermarket checkout.
Groaning, bargaining, and full blown tantrum — and everyone nearby notices.
Five minutes later you say, “Fine. One packet.”
The immediate tension disappears… but your frustration lingers.

Why This Matters

It’s not really about the sweets. It’s about the effort required to support children through strong emotions while holding your boundary.

When children learn to recognise and regulate their feelings, and when we coach them to find ways to meet their needs within the boundary, these moments become far easier.

Boundaries stop feeling exhausting, and children grow in capability, confidence, and cooperation — giving you calm, consistent control without the constant battle.

7 Surprising Reasons Why Parents Struggle To Stick To Boundaries And Where My Work Comes in as a Parenting Coach

Supporting families with children who feel things deeply is what I do.
When children learn healthy ways to express their emotions and feel understood, something really lovely happens — they become more cooperative, communication feels easier, and everyday routines begin to flow more smoothly.

Boundaries stop feeling heavy or exhausting.
You’re able to say no with confidence, stay calm during wobbles, and follow through without guilt or second-guessing yourself.

If you’re longing for more ease, connection and confidence at home, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

3. Boundaries Require Time, Energy and Consistency

Some boundaries involve simply withholding something, but others require ongoing energy and persistence — which is incredibly hard when you’re already stretched thin.

When we’re tired, overloaded or mentally done, even the simplest follow-through can feel like climbing a mountain.

Quick Example

You say homework must be finished before any gaming.
But after a full day at work, supervising spelling and maths feels like a marathon, so you sigh and say, “Fine, just go on the Xbox.”
Instant relief — silence, a moment to breathe.

But the next day, frustration bubbles up because nobody takes the rule seriously… and deep down you know it’s because enforcing it felt impossible in the moment.

Why This Matters

This isn’t weakness or bad parenting — it’s a sign that you’re human and running on empty.
Boundaries take consistency, and consistency takes capacity.

When we build routines and emotional regulation skills that reduce daily power struggles, enforcing boundaries becomes lighter, simpler and far more sustainable.

Why Parents Struggle to Stick to Boundaries

4. We Feel Responsible for Other People’s Emotions

Many of us grew up with messages like “Don’t upset anyone,” “Be good,” or “Stop making a fuss.”
So saying no can feel uncomfortable, selfish or even wrong. We were taught — often unintentionally — that keeping everyone happy is our job, and that harmony matters more than our own needs or limits.

If you were raised to be the “good girl” or “good boy,” you may have learned early on that approval came from pleasing others, staying quiet and not causing inconvenience.
That conditioning sticks, and as adults it can feel physically stressful to hold a boundary if someone is upset about it — especially our children.

Quick Example

You say it’s time to leave the park.
Your child bursts into loud tears: “You’re ruining everything!”
A rush of embarrassment and guilt hits — you don’t want to be seen as unkind, and the stares from other parents make you want to disappear.
So you stay another 20 minutes, even though you’re freezing, hungry and now running late.

What’s Really Happening

We’re not giving in because we don’t care about boundaries — we’re giving in because we were trained to prioritise keeping the peace over expressing our needs.
And when your nervous system equates someone else’s disappointment with danger, saying no feels threatening.

5. We Expect Children to Hold the Boundary For Us

A really common misunderstanding in parenting is believing that boundaries are instructions for children to follow — when in reality, boundaries are actions we take and uphold.

Children aren’t pushing limits to be difficult.

More often, they simply have different desires, needs or priorities in that moment — and they may lack the skills to do what we’re asking.
They’re learning how to navigate feelings, disappointment and self-control, and that’s a long-term developmental process.

Expecting children to hold the boundary themselves often leads to frustration for everyone.
They’re not designed to enforce limits — that’s our job.

Our role is to coach, guide and support them to manage their emotions and choices within the boundaries we set.

Quick Example

You say, “Stop throwing your toy.”

They throw it.

Instead of calmly following through, you sigh, “Just don’t do it again.”

They throw it again, and now you’re upset and wondering why they don’t listen.

But really — the boundary was ours to uphold, not theirs.

6. Society Pressures Parents to Be Self-Sacrificing

Modern culture often glorifies self- sacrificing — as if exhausted, depleted parenting somehow equals good parenting.

There’s an unspoken message that tending to your own needs is selfish, and that “good” parents give everything and ask for nothing.

We’re told to enjoy every moment, put our children first at all costs, and never need rest, space or silence… which is completely unrealistic and deeply unfair.

When we internalise these messages, setting boundaries around our own time or energy feels uncomfortable — even though it’s essential for healthy family dynamics.

It becomes easier to abandon our needs than face guilt or judgement, so we stop listening to what we actually require to function well.

Quick Example

You desperately need 10 quiet minutes with a cup of tea to reset, but instead you force yourself to sit on the floor and play LEGO because you think you should.

Rather than feeling connected, you feel drained and quietly resentful.

Why This Matters

When parents are regulated, rested and resourced, family life becomes infinitely smoother.

Children learn emotional health not by watching adults push themselves to breaking point, but by seeing what balance, self-respect and honest communication look like.

Honouring your needs isn’t selfish —it’s modelling healthy boundaries to your kids.

7. Sometimes It Isn’t Really Your Boundary

Boundaries work best when they come from your own values, priorities, and what truly matters in your household.

If a boundary exists only because of pressure, comparison, or external expectations, it’s almost impossible to maintain consistently — and the frustration that follows is inevitable.

Many parents fall into this trap because parenting advice, social media, family opinions, or cultural norms create a long list of “shoulds.”

It can feel like you’re failing if you don’t enforce these rules, even if they don’t actually align with what you care about.
When a boundary isn’t genuinely yours, every challenge, resistance, or delay can feel like proof that you’re a “bad parent” — when really, it’s the boundary itself that doesn’t fit.

Quick Example

You insist children must make their beds every morning because “everyone else does” or “it’s just what you’re meant to do.”
But in reality, perfect beds aren’t important to you.

You enforce it anyway, they resist, you eventually give up — and then feel guilty for abandoning a rule you never truly believed in.
The stress and resentment aren’t about the children — they’re about trying to uphold a standard that doesn’t reflect your values.

Why This Matters

Boundaries are only effective and sustainable when they reflect what you genuinely care about.

Letting go of “should” rules frees your energy for the boundaries that really matter, makes follow-through easier, and reduces unnecessary conflict in everyday family life.

So Where Do You Start With Healthy Boundaries?

Healthy boundaries begin with clarity — knowing what truly matters to you and deciding what you will consistently follow through on. In Language of Listening®, we approach boundaries differently: you set the limit because you’re the adult in charge, and at the same time you coach your child to meet their needs within that limit.

Instead of trying to stop behaviour through control or punishment, we help children build the skills they need to succeed inside the boundary. When children feel supported rather than shut down, they’re far more willing to cooperate — and they grow in confidence, capability and resilience.

This is the step in our framework called CAN DOs — showing your child what they can do within the boundary, not just what they can’t.

Quick Example

Boundary: “Screens only after the table is cleared.”
Your child wants screens now. Instead of arguing, you say:
“You can watch as soon as everything is cleared. Must be something you CAN DO to get it done faster?”

They might:

  • race to see who can clear the most

  • ask for help and work together

  • put on music and make it fun

They learn problem-solving, teamwork and emotional regulation — while you hold the boundary with calm confidence.

Boundaries become easier, cooperation grows, and family life feels lighter and more connected.
