Struggling with a rude or defiant child? This blog dives into one big mistake parents make when their child is rude or defiant—and what to do instead to shift behaviour quickly.
It started with a slammed door. There I was, standing in the hallway, frustration boiling over. My daughter had been ignoring every request I’d made.
And I snapped.
“You’re so rude!”
“You never do what you’re told!”
“You always have to argue!”
At the time, I genuinely thought that by pointing out what she was doing wrong, I was helping her learn. That if I just made it clear enough—spelled out all the faults—she’d finally understand and change.
Isn’t that what most of us believe? That calling out behaviour will motivate our child to fix it?
But when I stopped and looked at what was actually happening… it didn’t add up.

One Big Mistake Parents Make When Their Child Is Rude or Defiant
The more I pointed out her flaws, the more defiant she became.
Or she’d melt down completely.
We weren’t getting anywhere. We were stuck in a loop of conflict, and all it did was drive a wedge between us.
That was the moment something shifted in me.
I realised: There has to be another way—one where I can still be in charge, still have expectations, but not have to keep tearing her down to get there.

Discovering this changed everything…
It’s called the Strengths Tool, from the Language of Listening framework, and it flipped my whole approach on its head.
Instead of focusing on what was wrong, it showed me how to start noticing what was right.
At first, that felt backwards. Shouldn’t I be correcting the behaviour I don’t want? Isn’t that how change happens?
But here’s why this shift is so powerful:
What we focus on grows.
It’s how our brains work. When we label something—“My child is always rude,” or “They never listen”—our brain starts scanning for more examples to prove it true. We gather evidence to back up the story we’re telling ourselves, often without even realising it.
One Big Mistake Parents Make When Their Child Is Rude or Defiant is this:
We get stuck in that loop of fault-finding, and we don’t realise how much power our words and reactions hold—not just over how we feel and react, but over how our children see themselves.
Because it’s not just us looking for evidence. Our children are listening, too.
And the way we speak to them, the way we react to them—that becomes the mirror of how they see themselves.
-
Children act according to who they believe they are.
-
And they believe what we tell them.
So if we say they’re rude, or they never listen, or they’re always difficult—well, they believe us.
Not because they want to be that way… but because they trust us.
Because they’re still forming their identity, and we are shaping it every day with the words we use.

How to make the biggest change – One Big Mistake Parents Make When Their Child Is Rude or Defiant
The words we choose don’t just describe our children—they define them.
When we start naming strengths, we’re not just praising.
We’re holding up a mirror that says: This is how I see you. This is who you ARE.
Like when I said:
- “You stayed calm even though you were upset. That shows you have self-control.”
- “You’re trying again even though it’s hard. That shows you are persistent.”
In those moments, I was telling the truth. One that was already there, but I hadn’t been noticing.
And children, just like us, will rise to meet the version of themselves that feels strong, kind, and capable.
That’s how we start to build better behaviour…
Not through constant correction or criticism, but by helping our kids see their own capacity for growth.
Suddenly, my daughter’s identity started to shift.
From “the difficult one” to “the one who can calm herself down.”
From “always rude” to “the one who’s learning to speak up calmly.”
And when her identity changed, so did her behaviour.

And this isn’t just what happened between me and my daughter.
It’s what I see again and again in the families I support.
This shift doesn’t just improve day-to-day struggles. It changes the life trajectory of a child.
Because when a child sees themselves as “the rude one,” “the one who always gets it wrong,” or “the difficult one”—it sticks.
But when a child begins to believe they are capable, kind, thoughtful, resilient… their behaviour begins to reflect that belief.
They start becoming that version of themselves.
No telling off, criticism needed!
