Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way?

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way? Most Powerful Response

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way? Here’s What’s Really Going On And How Best To Respond.

If your 5 year-old is screaming when they’re not getting their own way, you’re not alone. Whether it’s over snacks, screen time, bedtime or toys—they want something, you say no, and suddenly you’re dealing with a full-blown meltdown.

It’s exhausting. And it can leave you wondering: Are they just being difficult? Am I doing something wrong?

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way?

It was 7:43am. We were already running late. My 5-year-old was standing in the kitchen in full dinosaur pyjamas, bright red in the face, shouting at the top of her lungs because I’d given her the green cup instead of the blue one. The blue cup that, as far as I could tell, was exactly the same except for the colour—and also currently in the dishwasher.

I could feel that old script creeping in: “She needs to learn she can’t always get her way.”

But something in me paused.

This moment, right here, felt like a crossroads.

Old Parenting Script: Win v Lose

Why kids scream when not getting own way.

Many of us grew up on this idea: parenting as a win-or-lose battle. The parent says no, the child has to accept it.

And if they don’t?

All in the goal to get the child to give up on what they want.

The idea behind it was usually noble: we thought we were preparing our kids for disappointment. That by stopping them wanting things, they’d learn how to cope with life.

  • “You can’t always have what you want in life.”

Yep. That one.

But… who taught us that message? And how well did it actually serve us?

What If The Beatles Had Taken “NO” for an Answer?

Imagine if The Beatles had heard “No” from that first record label and just… stopped. “Ah well, guess we’re not cut out for this music thing.”

Or if a now-famous actor had gone to one audition, been rejected, and decided, “Nope. Clearly not meant for me.”

The world would be a very different place.

The truth is, we don’t want to raise kids who just accept “No” and give up.

The Most Powerful Response To A Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way

We want to raise kids who stay connected to what they want and find creative, respectful ways to pursue it. Kids who can hear:

“Not like that” and still think, “Okay, then how else?”

A Different Way of Thinking About Boundaries

At Keeping Your Cool Parenting, we look at things a little differently. We do want our children to respect other people’s boundaries, absolutely.

AND—we also want them to stay connected to what they want.

  • To see what’s possible.

  • To feel empowered to go after things in life without steamrolling others.

  • It’s not either/or. It’s both.

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way?

When a child is screaming because they didn’t get their way, it’s often NOT about entitlement or being “spoilt.”

It’s about possibility. It’s about a child who can see what they want, but feels totally blocked from getting there.

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way?

Imagine this:

You’re driving somewhere new, you know the destination is just up ahead, but suddenly a roadblock appears.

  • No signs.
  • No detour.
  • No other way—just “NO.”

Frustrating, right?

That’s what it can feel like for a child in those moments. – It’s no wonder they shout and get frustrated!

Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way?

From “NO” to Possibility

Back to the blue cup.

Instead of shutting it down with “Oh for goodness’ sake, it’s just a cup!”—I crouched down and said:

“You really wanted the blue cup. —it’s just right for drinking juice.”

She nodded, still tearful but softening.

I said, “It’s in the dishwasher, so we can’t use it right now. Hmm…Must be something you CAN DO to make this one more like the blue one today?”

She found a blue napkin to wrap around it. (Kids are super creative in finding solutions when we give them the opportunity!)

Was it perfect? Nope. But she felt heard. I held my boundary. AND she learned she could still go for what she wanted—even if the first path wasn’t available.

That’s the win – win of parenting!

Another example:

My son wanted a new computer game—badly. Only problem? It was really close to his birthday and the holidays, and I’d already decided I wasn’t buying him more things right now.

Old script in my head: “He needs to learn to wait. To not expect things all the time. To accept no.”

But instead of shutting it down, I chose to stay curious.

“You really want that game. I can see how excited you are about it. Hmm… I wonder what your plan is?”

And you know what?

He found a way. He gathered up some old games he wasn’t playing anymore, marched down to the game shop, and part-exchanged them. Paid the difference himself. Got the game.

Imagine if I’d just said “No” and left it at that. What would he have learned? Probably nothing other than: Wanting things is bad. Mum says no. Give up.

But instead, he learned how to problem-solve. How to value things. How to work out a solution that worked for him and me.

So, Next Time When You’re Dealing with a Screaming 5 Year-old Not Getting Own Way… What If We Rewrote the Script?

So next time your child is melting down because they didn’t get their way, try this:

  • Pause.
  • Name the want.
  • Wonder aloud: What do they actually want? And is there a way they can get that, that works for me too?

It doesn’t mean saying yes to everything.
It means saying yes to them. To their creativity. Their drive. Their spark.

Because we don’t just want obedient kids.
We want Beatles. And problem-solvers. And kids who keep going, even when the first answer is “No.”
