When Your Child Is Out Of Control. It’s not bad parenting. It’s not a “broken” child. It’s something deeper and more hopeful than you’ve been told.
How many of us have reached our absolute limit with our kids’ behaviour?
Slamming doors. Screaming matches. Constant defiance.
Maybe they’re skipping school, vaping in their room, getting aggressive, or just completely shutting down. You try talking, reasoning, shouting – nothing lands.
So you turn to consequences.
-
Grounded for two weeks.
-
No phone.
-
Wi-Fi off.
-
You take the door off their bedroom.
-
Literally, you’re doing everything you can think of to make the behaviour stop.
-
But instead of getting better… it gets worse.
It’s exhausting. It’s heartbreaking. And it’s terrifying.

When Your Child’s behaviour Is Out Of Control. You’re not alone.
I speak with parents every day who are at breaking point. And the truth is – most of the approaches we reach for when things spiral out of control aren’t working.
Not because we’re not trying hard enough, but because we’re aiming at the wrong target.

When Punishment Doesn’t Work
When kids are out of control, there’s often this underlying narrative that they’re just being difficult. That they’re choosing to act like this.
But what if we paused to ask: Why are they acting like this?
What if we looked beneath the behaviour?

Let me take you somewhere you might not expect.
– Into the world of gangs.
What Gangs Can Teach Us About Behaviour
Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, worked in Los Angeles at the height of the gang crisis in the 80s and 90s. In 1992 alone, there were 1,000 gang-related killings. In response, law enforcement poured money and resources into suppression.
-
Arrests.
-
Raids.
-
Lock-ups.
-
And yet… the violence continued.
Boyle and his team did something radical instead. They didn’t try to punish gang members out of gangs. They treated them like human beings.
He said something that’s stuck with me: “Gang violence is about a lethal absence of hope.”
Think about that for a second.
They weren’t violent because they were monsters. They were violent because they saw no other future.
-
No options.
-
No way out.
- No possibilities.
And here’s where the dots connect to our kids.

When a child is out of control, it’s easy to assume they’re just trying to push boundaries, seek attention, or “get away” with something.
But often, the real issue is this:
They can’t see another way.
Just like those gang members Father Boyle worked with, out-of-control kids are often operating from a place of hopelessness.
Not necessarily about life — but about relationships, regulation, and themselves.
-
They don’t see a different way to react when they’re hurt.
-
They don’t believe they can communicate without exploding.
-
They don’t know how to repair, reconnect, or feel safe in hard moments
-
And if they can’t see those possibilities, they can’t choose them.
That’s why everything starts with hope — with giving them a vision for a better way, and giving you the tools to guide them there.
If you’re reading this and nodding, feeling seen and also completely overwhelmed, know this:
-
You’re not failing.

You just need a new map.

When your child is out of control: Let me show you how to move from conflict and chaos to connection and calm.
I worked with a mum of a 15-year-old girl. Her daughter’s behaviour was so out of control – not going to school, shouting, fighting every day. Home life was unbearable. Mum was exhausted and heartbroken and on the verge of kicking her daughter out.
But within a month or two of working together, her daughter’s behaviour shifted. Their relationship transformed. The fighting stopped, school improved, and most importantly — she’s still at home, safe and loved.
And it all started because Mum led the way. She stopped focusing on punishment and started focusing on possibilities.
This is what she had to say about working with me: She posted this on Facebook.

You can do the same. And I’m here to walk beside you.
