My kids don’t listen to me!
Wondering what to do if your child doesn’t listen to you? Keep reading for practical solutions.
When my daughter didn’t listen to me, I used to think it was because she was being defiant or naughty.
It was frustrating and left me feeling helpless. I found myself stuck in a cycle of repeating myself, shouting, or using threats, hoping that something would change.
It wasn’t until I flipped my focus that I began to see things differently.
And thankfully, I turned things around.
There are lots of reasons why a child doesn’t listen, and most have nothing to do with disobedience.
Understanding what’s really going on helps us find easy solutions that work.
What I learned is that, as humans, we have natural reactions—what we put into any conversation, we get back.
It’s a simple loop: the way we communicate affects how others respond.
Although it might feel like we’re blaming ourselves, it isn’t about blame or fault.
It’s just much easier to focus on how we communicate than to try and change our kids’ reactions.

My kids don’t listen to me. Why kids don’t listen
I started by asking myself a different question.
Instead of asking, “Why doesn’t my daughter listen to me?” I started asking myself, “Do I speak in a way that my child will listen?”
This shift in perspective opened my eyes to a few key areas where my approach might need a few tweaks.
When your kids don’t listen, start here:
Feeling disconnected. How it affects a child’s listening and cooperation
Sometimes, when kids don’t listen, it’s a sign they’re feeling disconnected. It hit me that if I wasn’t really listening to my daughter, how could I expect her to listen to me?
We all know that a connected relationship is key to cooperation. Sadly, when I saw my daughter as rude and defiant, I responded with punishment and lectures. No wonder she didn’t want to listen!
Too many instructions at once
I used to overwhelm my daughter, I’d say to her. “Go upstairs, brush your hair, brush your teeth, make your bed.”
But all it did was confuse her and make it hard for her to focus on anything. Kids, unlike adults, don’t have the same long-term memory, which means they struggle to remember too many instructions at once. Plus, they’re easily distracted.
So, I started simplifying things by giving one clear, straightforward instruction at a time. This way, she could easily understand and follow through without getting lost in a sea of requests. It’s amazing how such a simple change made a huge difference!
My kids don’t listen to me: here’s a few things that might be stopping them.
Nagging
I realised that my constant reminders and repeated requests might have been causing more frustration than cooperation. Causing her to not listen until I shouted
I didn’t realise how annoying I was with the constant nagging!
I mean, when someone nags at me, I feel compelled to do the opposite! No wonder she tuned me out!
Instead of nagging, I started asking once and then giving her some time to get it done. This little shift made a huge difference! She felt more respected and less pressured, and she was way more likely to cooperate.
Giving her a bit of space to respond really improved things and made our interactions much less frustrating for both of us.
Nitpicking
When I was struggling with my daughter’s behaviour, I didn’t realise I was mainly focused on pointing out her faults, thinking it would change her behaviour.
As parents, we often believe we’re doing what’s best for our child by correcting their ‘bad’ behaviour. But if we only point out our kids’ faults, it’s no wonder they don’t listen!
Criticism can leave them feeling discouraged and shut down. Think about it—would you listen to someone who was always nitpicking?
Instead, by pointing out their STRENGTHs and helping them feel heard and valued, we set the stage for willing cooperation.

Why my kids don’t listen: common mistakes that cause kids to tune out
Threats
It was easy to use threats to get immediate results, but I noticed this often led to power struggles and made my child feel judged.
Using judgmental language can make kids feel like they’re being shamed, even if that’s not our intention.
Then I discovered Language of Listening’s simple 3-part toolkit. It helped me get my kids to cooperate willingly, instead of constantly being at odds. It’s a game-changer!
No bribes, no threats, no punishments and better behaviour! What’s not to love?
Questions instead of making statements
I thought I was being kind by phrasing things as questions, like, “Can you please do this?” or “Will you clean up your toys?”
But I realised, if I didn’t want to hear a “no,” asking wasn’t the best approach.
It’s confusing for kids who take things literally. They think it’s a real question, they answer, and then we get mad because it was actually a request.
Making clear, direct statements works much better!

Speaking in a calm tone
I quickly realised that my tone of voice was making a huge difference in how my daughter responded. When I was harsh or frustrated, she’d get defensive or shut down. I also noticed that sometimes my tone made her feel like she was in the wrong.
So, I made a conscious effort to stay calm and speak more gently.
It really helped smooth out our conversations and showed her how to communicate respectfully. It’s amazing what a difference a friendly tone can make!
What to do when my kids don’t listen to me
These reflections weren’t about blaming myself but about finding ways to improve how we talk to each other.
By tweaking the way I spoke and approaching things with more empathy, I saw a big shift in our interactions.
It’s way easier to change how I communicate than to try and make my daughter change her reactions.
Focusing on these areas helped me build a stronger connection with her and encouraged much better cooperation.
A few changes made such a big difference!
