Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out & What Actually Works

Why is your 3-year-old is acting out? If you’re left feeling confused, frustrated or on the brink of tears—you’re not alone. I’ve been there. And trust me, there is a way through it that doesn’t involve shouting, bribes, or completely losing your cool.

Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out – The Toddler Years Are No Joke

I remember those early years with my daughter like it was yesterday. She’s a confident, emotionally-aware 16-year-old now, but wow—age three? Her tantrums were out of control!

One minute she was calm, and the next she was lying on the floor sobbing because I cut her toast into triangles instead of squares. Total meltdown over toast.

I found myself walking on eggshells, dreading the next meltdown.

It honestly felt like I was constantly hitting a wall. Everyone told me she was just being naughty or testing boundaries and that I needed to “be stricter.”

Spoiler: that didn’t work. In fact, it made everything worse.

It wasn’t until I discovered Language of Listening® (the coaching model I use and teach.) that things finally began to shift.

Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out

What’s Really Going On When a 3-Year-Old Acts Out?

If you’re wondering, “Why is my child suddenly acting out?” the answer might be simpler than you think.

Your child isn’t being ‘bad’. They’re overwhelmed.

At three, your child is learning to:

  • Assert their independence

  • Deal with huge emotions,

  • Figure out how the world works

  • —all at once.

That’s a big job for a little person with very little life experience or self-control.

So when they fall apart over something that feels small to you (like turning off the TV or leaving the park), it’s not because they’re trying to make your life difficult.

It’s because they haven’t learned how to manage all of those feelings yet. And they need you to guide them through it.

Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out. – The Simple 3-Step Method That Changed Everything

Once I started using this 3-step approach from Language of Listening®, everything shifted—for her and for me. It gave me the confidence to respond with calm instead of panic, and helped my daughter feel more understood, capable and in control.

Here’s how it works in real life:

Real-Life Example: Leaving the Playground

Your 3-year-old is in full flow at the playground. You know it’s time to go… and you’re bracing yourself for the inevitable meltdown.

Step 1 – Say What You See®
“You’re having so much fun and don’t want to leave. You wish we could stay forever.”
This helps your child feel seen and heard, reducing the need to escalate.

Step 2 – Offer a CAN DO
“I wonder if there’s something fun we can do on the way home… Want to race to the car or spot five red things?”
This invites cooperation instead of resistance, and gives them some power in the moment.

Step 3 – Point Out Strengths
“You really wanted to keep playing, but you found a way to make leaving fun—look at you!”
This builds confidence and reinforces the behaviours you want to see more of.

This tiny shift in how you respond? It changes everything.

🌟 Your child feels heard.
🌟 You coach your child through tricky moments.
🌟 And the power struggles? They start to ease.

Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out – Why This Works (Even When It Feels Too Simple)

Because you’re:

  • Validating their experience (instead of dismissing it)

  • Giving them a sense of control (instead of forcing obedience)

  • Reinforcing their strengths (instead of focusing on mistakes)

This approach helps children feel empowered and understood. And when a child feels seen, they don’t have to shout to get your attention.

Why Your 3-Year-Old Is Acting Out

So… What’s ‘Normal’ for a 3-Year-Old?

Quick answer: emotional chaos is completely normal.

At this age, they’re learning to:

  • Manage frustration
  • Navigate disappointment
  • Beginning to notice they have ideas, preferences, and needs that are different from yours.

They live fully in the moment and don’t have the tools to hit pause on a strong emotion. That’s why things can escalate so quickly.

Knowing this helps us respond with patience rather than punishment.

Your Role: Be Their Emotional Coach

Think of yourself not as the referee—but as the coach on the sidelines, rooting for them and bringing out their best.

It’s not about stopping the tantrums instantly (because let’s be honest, that’s not always possible). It’s about supporting them through it and teaching them how to handle those big feelings over time.

And yes, it takes practice. For them and for us.

What other parents are saying after working with me:

“Camilla was the answer to our prayers. I am endlessly grateful to her and only wish I’d found her sooner.” Louisa, Mum of 2

“Camilla coached us through different methods. Methods which I had never thought about, but gave us incredible results in a very short space of time, methods which we still use now and are so easy to implement on a daily basis. I am no longer the shouty mum I used to be. And my relationship with my kids has changed so much, I often wonder why I hadn’t started this journey sooner.’ Lucy, Mum of 3

“I was stuck in a pretty unpleasant vicious circle, with three awesome small children and was ruining it. I was afraid they would grow up and not trust me. Within the first couple of weeks working with Camilla I saw positive changes.” Claire, Mum of 3
