Exhausted And Overwhelmed As A Parent? One Simple Strategy

Exhausted and overwhelmed as a parent? Here’s one truth that will give you more energy and bring more happiness to family life.

Let me take you back to a particular evening. My daughter pleaded with me to stay up late to finish watching her favourite show.

Every fibre of my being wanted to say “Yes,” to make her happy and see that smile on her face.

But I had already said no earlier, knowing she needed her rest for school the next day. As I watched her shoulders slump in disappointment, a wave of guilt washed over me.

I almost caved. But then, I caught myself. I realised that this wasn’t just about bedtime.

Feeling Exhausted and Overwhelmed as a Parent? Discover the One Truth That Can Help

If you’ve ever felt that pang of guilt when setting a limit with your child, you’re not alone.

It’s natural to want to make our kids happy, to be the parent who says “Yes” and never disappoints.

But here’s the thing—when you constantly prioritise their immediate happiness over what’s best for both of you, you’re setting yourself up for a lot more than just tired kids.

  • You see, every time you stretch yourself thin to avoid that moment of conflict or disappointment, you’re slowly draining your own energy and well-being.

  • And training your kids to become demanding and entitled. And when their behaviour spirals, we often blame them, not realising we’ve played a big part in creating it.

It might feel like you’re keeping the peace, but the truth is, you’re paying a steep price. When we go past our own limits, we don’t just lose sleep or patience—we lose a bit of ourselves.

And our kids?

They lose the chance to learn healthy boundaries and respect for others’ needs, setting them up for struggles down the road.

The exhaustion builds.

The resentment creeps in, and before you know it, you’re running on empty, wondering why you can’t take anymore.

Maybe you’re familiar with this feeling: you’re trying so hard to keep everyone else happy that you’re left feeling empty and exhausted. You give and give, but the tank never seems to refill.

And it’s not your fault.

First of all, somewhere along the way, we bought into the idea that holding boundaries means we’re being mean.

We’re so afraid of being “mean” that we let boundaries slide, thinking it’s the kinder, more positive approach.

The impact of parental burnout

So, why can it be so hard to say No to our kids?

Maybe it’s because we’re trying to avoid how we were raised. Many of us grew up with parents who shouted, punished, and threatened, and we swore we’d never be like that.

We’re determined to be better, kinder, more understanding. But in our effort to be nothing like our own parents, we sometimes swing too far the other way.

Or maybe we were raised to be the ‘good child,’ believing that being nice was the key to being accepted and loved.

This often meant trying to please others, keeping things smooth, and avoiding conflict at all costs. We didn’t want to rock the boat or upset anyone because, deep down, we feared that if did, we weren’t ‘good enough.’

Now, as parents, that same fear can drive us to over-give to our kids, trying to ensure their happiness so we can feel like we’re doing a good job. But in the process, we may lose sight of our own needs and boundaries.

Understanding where this urge to over-give comes from is the key to setting ourselves free.

Have compassion for yourself—understanding where this comes from helps us focus on changing our own patterns rather than trying to control our kids’ behaviour.

Which is so much more effective.

It’s impossible to raise kids while trying to avoid all conflict and disappointment. We have to accept that our kids won’t always be happy with our decisions, and that’s okay.

We have to be the one in charge, set boundaries, and guide our children, helping them grow into well-adjusted adults.

If our goal is to be the “nice” parent who never says no or sets limits, we end up compromising our authority and our ability to effectively parent.

Why ‘Being Nice’ Isn’t Working—and What to Do Instead

Your kids may seem happy in the moment when you say “yes,” but deep down, you know that endless giving isn’t making anyone truly satisfied—least of all you.

It’s a false fix that doesn’t address the underlying issue:

The need for healthy boundaries.

Healthy boundaries are so important because they keep you from getting overwhelmed and burned out. They help you stay true to yourself, manage your energy and make sure relationships stay respectful and balanced.

Basically, they’re your way of saying, “I matter too!” while showing others how to treat you right.

Watch for These Signs That You’re Going Past Your Boundaries

Setting boundaries is crucial, but it’s easy to let them slip without even realising it. Here are some signs that you might be going past your boundaries:

  1. Constant Exhaustion: You feel drained and depleted, even after activities that should be enjoyable.

  2. Resentment: Irritation or resentment builds when you agree to things you didn’t want to do.

  3. Guilt After ‘No’: You feel guilty or anxious after setting a boundary, often second-guessing your decision.

  4. Overcommitting: You frequently say “yes” despite an already packed schedule, leaving little time for yourself.

  5. Neglecting Self-Care: Your own needs are consistently ignored to accommodate others.

Overwhelmed by Parenting?

A New Approach: Saying ‘No’ Without the Guilt

Here’s where things start to change.

What if I told you that learning to say “no”—and meaning it—can be one of the best things you can do for both you and your kids?

I know, it sounds counterintuitive. But when you set healthy boundaries and stick to them, you’re not just protecting your own well-being—you’re also showing your children that it’s okay to have limits, to say no, and to prioritise your needs.

Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you need to punish or be overly strict. Holding a healthy boundary is about being clear and consistent with your expectations while remaining calm and compassionate.

It’s not about controlling your kids but about guiding them.

For example, if bedtime is 8 p.m. A healthy boundary means sticking to that time even if your child wants to stay up later.

  • You don’t give in to arguments or guilt.

  • You stay firm, but you’re not harsh. You’re there to support them, not control them.

Showing them that while they may not always get what they want, they are still loved and cared for within those boundaries.

This approach shows respect for both you and your child.

It’s about creating a balance where your needs as a parent are met, and your child learns important life skills like responsibility, respect, and self-discipline—without feeling controlled.

And that’s really tough if you’ve never seen healthy boundaries modelled for you. It’s okay to struggle with this—learning to set and maintain boundaries is a skill that takes time and practice, especially if you didn’t grow up with it. Be kind to yourself as you navigate this new approach.
