Child Behaviour Problems – Ready To Try A New Approach?
Let’s do this!
Feeling knackered from trying every trick in the parenting book to get your kids to listen and behave? Does it seem like you’re stuck in an endless battle with no way out?
I know you care deeply about your kids; if you didn’t, you wouldn’t be hunting for answers. You want things to be different at home. You’re longing for those lovely family moments without the constant stress and tension.
And here’s the good news – wanting that change is the first step towards creating a more peaceful and fulfilling family life.
Ready to try a new approach?
So many of the common parenting strategies out there set us up to fail. They promise quick fixes and easy solutions, but in reality, they often miss the mark entirely.
It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole – no matter how hard we try, it just doesn’t work the way we think it should.
Is punishment effective? After supporting hundreds of families over nearly a decade, I realised that most of the strategies we use fall into the control cycle.
Parents come to me for support, they often say they’ve ‘tried everything’ to change their child’s behaviour.
And they’re not alone. The thing is, the ‘everything we try’ is only the everything we know.
Let’s explore why punishments, aren’t effective.
Here’s the thing: when we say ‘everything,’ the strategies we typically use fall into the control category.

These strategies comes from good intentions
We might take away our children’s phones or ban them from seeing friends, hoping they’ll learn from the consequences and change their behaviour.
We think these strategies will motivate them to do better next time.
But here’s the thing: even with all the motivation in the world, it won’t work if our kids don’t have the skills to behave as we ask.
It’s like expecting them to read fluently when we’ve only read to them a handful of times—it just doesn’t add up.
Or we might believe these punishments will deter them from misbehaving again.
But it doesn’t work like that. Instead, it creates an environment of fear and resentment.
Where our kids start believing they deserve bad things to happen if they slip up.
It’s like teaching them to walk on eggshells instead of building a healthy environment for growth and learning.
Does punishment work? is punishment effective?
Let me explain why punishments aren’t effective and don’t work in the way we think they do.
We think that by using a punishment it will deter your child from misbehaving.
When we use methods like banning screen time or taking away privileges, we’re mainly focused on stopping the behaviour we don’t like in the moment.
These strategies don’t really teach our kids how to handle situations differently or how to problem solve.
That’s why it seems like we’re dealing with the same issues over and over again. It’s like trying to fix a leaky tap by just mopping up the water.
These quick fixes don’t get to the root of why our kids are behaving a certain way, so they don’t give us the lasting results we want.

Let’s dive into something we’ve all done at some point: the classic move of confiscating our kids’ phones or banning screen time when they step out of line.

Have you noticed it often initiates a cycle?
The more we control, the more they push back. They might comply temporarily, but the underlying issues remain unresolved, leading to repeated misbehaviour.
Instead of learning how to handle situations better, they just become more resentful and defiant, creating a never-ending loop of frustration for both parents and kids.

In the midst of all this chaos, it’s easy to spiral into that guilt trip of “I’m a terrible parent. They’ll never listen to me!”
Is punishment effective?
If you’re using punishments, you’re not a terrible parent. It’s just that the age-old advice of taking away stuff to get our kids to behave is terrible advice.
Imagine if someone tried to control you by taking your phone away. Would you be jumping with joy to cooperate? Nah, didn’t think so.
Our kids are no different to us. When we use punitive measures like taking away toys or banning screen time,
it doesn’t magically make them compliant. Instead, it often breeds resistance and resentment, creating a cycle of frustration for both us and our children.

So, if punishments aren’t effective, what can we do instead to get our kids to behave?
Shifting from punishments can feel like a big change.
It’s natural to worry that we might be veering into permissive parenting territory, where it seems like the kids are calling all the shots.
But it’s not about giving in or not coaching our children to better behaviour; it’s about finding alternative methods that promote cooperation and skill building rather than fear and control.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your child’s behaviour and wondering how to navigate those challenging moments, remember this: Our kids aren’t out to get us—they genuinely want to do well and succeed in life.
So, forget about trying to bribe them into behaving with promises of rewards or threatening to take stuff away. Trust me, it’s like trying to fix a broken bicycle with duct tape. – it might hold for a bit, but it won’t last.
