Is Taking Away Your Child’s Phone a Good Punishment?
When your child is being disrespectful and nothing seems to work, it’s tempting to reach for the ultimate consequence: taking their phone away.
But what if that’s not actually solving the problem?
Let’s look at what’s really going on—and what works better.
If you’re ready to shift gears and find a way that works in the moment and long term, keep reading.
But before, let’s talk about why taking our kid’s phone away doesn’t work in the way we hoped.
By the time you take their phone, you’ve usually already:
- had multiple conversations
- explained why the behaviour isn’t okay
- set boundaries
- warned about consequences
And still… nothing changes.
You’re exhausted. You’re repeating yourself. And taking the phone feels like the only option left.
You’re not alone. So many of us have been told that’s what works to change our child’s behaviour.

The Truth About Behaviour
We’ve been taught to label behaviour as “good” or “bad.”
But behaviour isn’t moral—it’s communication.
That eye roll, the attitude, the slammed door?
It’s not random. It’s your child saying:
“I’m having a hard time.”
Behaviour Isn’t “Good” or “Bad” – It’s Communication
If we want to create real change, the first step is understanding the behaviour before we react to it.

The Myth That Punishments Will Motivate Better Behaviour
Why Taking the Phone Doesn’t Work
Taking away a phone is based on a common belief: “If I punish them, they’ll behave better.”
But that only works if your child already has the skills to behave differently—and is choosing not to.
Most of the time, that’s not what’s happening.
A Quick Reality Check
Think about a moment when you lost your cool. You snapped. Were overwhelmed. Said something you didn’t mean.
Now imagine someone responded by taking your phone away.
Would that help you behave better next time?
Or would it leave you feeling frustrated, misunderstood… maybe even resentful? Less likely to cooperate?
That’s exactly how it feels for your child.
They don’t learn how to handle the situation differently. They just learn what happens to them when they struggle.
Your child doesn’t need more motivation.
They need skills—like how to manage emotions, communicate, and handle frustration.
Taking their phone doesn’t teach those skills. It just adds more frustration.

At the heart of it, taking away your child’s phone assumes that punishment will motivate better behaviour.
But that logic rests on faulty thinking: it assumes your child has the skills to behave better and is wilfully choosing not to.
And that taking their phone away will teach them the skills they need.
Here’s the truth: your child already wants to behave. As human beings, we all crave connection, understanding, and positive relationships.
Your child wants to get along with you, feel heard, and be seen for the good in them.

Taking Away the Phone Doesn’t Solve the Problem
We often take phones away for reasons that feel logical in the moment, but they rarely solve the underlying problem.
Taking away the phone might feel like a quick fix, but it doesn’t address the real problem. It doesn’t teach your child how to handle their emotions, communicate better, or make different choices next time.
Instead of Fixing the Problem, It Makes Things Worse
Instead of guiding your child toward better behaviour, taking their phone away often drives a wedge between you and them. What might have started as an attempt to “teach a lesson” can quickly turn into resentment.
Short Term Fix
What It Actually Creates
You might get short-term compliance.
But underneath, something else is growing:
- Resentment – “They don’t understand me.”
- Shame – “I’m the problem.”
- Shutdown – “It’s safer not to say anything.”
That’s not behaviour change. That’s survival.
And it slowly erodes your relationship.
What’s Really Driving “Disrespect” and unwanted behaviour
Disrespect isn’t about rebellion.
It’s about powerlessness.
When your child feels:
- unheard
- judged
- misunderstood
…it comes out as attitude.
If we only react to the tone, we miss the cause.
The Cycle Many Families Get Stuck In
It usually looks like this:
- Your child feels powerless → acts out
- You see disrespect → respond with control
- They feel more disconnected → escalate
- You react again
Round and round it goes.
Not because either of you is the problem—
but because neither of you is being understood.

So What Works Instead?
Instead of control, your child needs coaching.
This is where the Language of Listening® approach changes everything.
You move from:
- punishing → guiding
- reacting → understanding
- controlling → connecting
And that’s where real change happens.
Why This Approach Works
1. It builds connection first
Children listen more when they feel understood.
2. It develops real-life skills
You’re teaching them how to handle emotions—not just avoid consequences.
3. It changes how they see themselves
Instead of “I’m bad,” they learn, “I can figure this out.”
Imagine This Instead
A home where:
- you’re not constantly repeating yourself
- arguments don’t spiral
- your child actually listens
Not because they’re scared of losing their phone—
but because they feel respected, capable, and connected.
