When your teen lies and what can we do about it? Discover how shifting your approach can transform honesty in your family.
A client of mine recently came to me, frustrated and worried about her son’s habit of lying. She shared a story from the other day: she’d overheard him snapping at his younger sister.
Right away, she stepped in, telling him: “We don’t treat each other like that.”
But instead of admitting he’d overstepped, her son immediately denied it happened. “I didn’t do anything,” he’d insisted.
Which only added fuel to her frustration. Now, she was not only upset about his behaviour toward his sister, but also about the fact he was lying to her face.
Her first instinct was to double-down—she felt she had to get through to him, to make him understand this behaviour wasn’t acceptable.
And behind that instinct was a growing fear and sudden panic:
-
“He’s lying now, what’s next?”
-
“Will he get worse?”
-
“Will he end up in trouble with school, with the law?”
-
“Can I ever trust him?”

It’s Easy To Spiral When Your Teen Lies, Isn’t It?
But here’s the thing: reacting to surface behaviour without stopping to understand what’s beneath can miss the point entirely.
When we approach our kids with our fears, it always backfires.
Instead of listening, they go into defence mode, protecting themselves by denying, deflecting, or lying.
It’s a bit like when we shout at our kids. We know, deep down, that it’s not the best way to handle things, but in the moment, it feels justified. Now imagine someone criticising you for shouting right then—it wouldn’t help you want to change, would it?
You’d feel misunderstood, cornered, maybe even defiant.
The Real Reason Your Teen Lies
So why did my client’s son lie? Maybe he felt embarrassed, maybe he didn’t like being corrected in front of his sister, or maybe he was dealing with something totally unrelated and couldn’t process his emotions.
This isn’t about excusing unwanted behaviour or not addressing it, it’s about understanding why so we can get to the root of the issue.
Here are some likely reasons why teens lie, reasons that often have less to do with “bad behaviour” and more to do with what they’re feeling in the moment:

Shifting from Punishment to Connection When Your Teen Lies
So, what if we tried to see through the behaviour and made space for honesty?
Imagine the typical reaction: frustrated, the mum crosses her arms and says, “Why would you lie to me? Just tell the truth!” Her son immediately goes on the defence, his body language closing off as he denies any wrongdoing. She pushes harder, telling him how much she values honesty and raising fears about trust. But her son’s reaction is only more irritation—he’s already tuned out, feeling misunderstood. The moment ends in a standoff, with frustration on both sides and a breakdown of connection.
What if you responded differently when your teen lies?
Using the Language of Listening framework, the mum takes a breath, then softens her approach: “You seem frustrated. What’s going on?” She doesn’t jump straight to the “lesson”—she pauses to acknowledge her son first.
Her son relaxes a bit, starting to explain, knowing he won’t be instantly judged. The conversation opens up, and now there’s room for him to express himself, maybe even admit why he reacted the way he did.
As the mum listens, her son doesn’t just hear what he did wrong—he sees that his mum understands his perspective. Now, honesty and accountability feel like a choice he’s ready to make.
With this simple shift—from reacting out of frustration to responding with empathy and understanding—things look entirely different.
Instead of confrontation, the focus becomes connection and understanding.
The Language of Listening® framework builds trust by making teens feel safe to be themselves, knowing they’ll be heard rather than judged.
