What causes a child to become defiant? Once you see behind the behaviour, you can’t un-see it.
It’s like putting on a pair of glasses for the first time, suddenly everything sharpens, the blur makes sense, and you start to notice things differently.
And from there, everything begins to shift.

It was just a passing comment from a mum at the school gate. Her voice was light, almost joking: “He’s just so naughty sometimes. Honestly, I don’t know what to do with him.”
I smiled kindly, but inside, I felt that familiar tug.
Not because she was doing anything wrong – she clearly cared deeply about her child.
But because this is the story we hear all the time.
When a child is acting up… it must be them that needs fixing.
It’s such a common view…
That children who:
- Hit,
- Shout,
- Refuse to listen,
- Push boundaries…
Are being “naughty”, “defiant”, or just “disrespectful”.
But the truth is: that view misses so much.
Because when we pause and really see what’s going on beneath the surface, we start to notice something else entirely.
What Causes A Child To Become Defiant?

Defiance isn’t random. It’s predictable.
- It’s not a flaw in the child.
- It’s not bad parenting.
It’s actually a very natural, very human defence mechanism.
When we feel misunderstood, criticised, or like the people we love see the worst in us, it hurts.
We feel alone. Misunderstood, Unseen. Disconnected.
And disconnection is painful — for all of us.
Just like adults, children are wired for connection.
What Causes A Child To Become Defiant?
So when that connection feels lost or unsafe, children do what any human would do: they protect themselves.
- What do you do when you feel misunderstood, criticised, or like no one’s really hearing you?
- Do you shut down? Get defensive? Push people away?
What Is Defiance? And What Causes A Child To Become Defiant?Defiance is just the outward sign of what’s really going on underneath A child stuck in defensiveness, trying to protect themselves the only way they know how. Humans defend themselves emotionally when they feel hurt because it’s how we protect our sense of safety and worth. When something feels painful—like rejection, criticism, or being misunderstood—our brain senses threat, even if it’s not physical. That emotional pain triggers our natural defence systems, just like it would if we were in danger. We might shut down, push people away, argue, or act out — all as a way to avoid feeling that deep hurt again. It’s not a conscious choice. It’s survival. And for children, that emotional defence often looks like what we call “bad behaviour” — but it’s really just a signal that something inside feels unsafe or too big to handle alone. |
What Does Defensiveness Look Like In A Child?
It looks exactly like what we call “defiance”.
- The shouting.
- The refusing to listen.
- The hitting.
- The swearing.
- The eye-rolls.
- The stomping.
- The “you can’t make me!”
All ways humans defend themselves emotionally…

But here’s the good news – if defiance is caused by disconnection, it means we can turn it around by creating connection.
I worked with a gorgeous family not too long ago – they were done. Totally worn out. Their 7-year-old was lashing out daily.
Hitting, swearing, kicking furniture, throwing things across the room. Every day felt like a battlefield.
They’d tried all the usual stuff – reward charts, time-outs, consequences, calm voices, raised voices… you name it. Nothing worked.
In fact, it seemed to be getting worse.
And they said what so many parents tell me: “We’ve tried everything.”
But here’s the thing… they hadn’t tried connection first.
- And I don’t mean love – they adore their child.
- I don’t mean attention – they give plenty of that.
I mean real, grounded connection. A very specific way of responding that most of us have never been taught.
We think connection is just about loving our kids. But it’s not.

Meet the Need For Connection is a skill. A language.
That’s why the coaching model I use and teach, is called Language of Listening® – because it really is like learning a whole new language.
And just like learning French, you don’t just pick it up from a book or an Instagram post. You need practice. You need someone walking beside you, helping you translate it into your day-to-day life, in your voice, with your child.
That’s what I do with parents.
We tune in to what’s really going on under the surface. I show you how to respond differently – not from scripts or quick fixes, but from deep understanding.
I teach parents how to see behaviour differently – because when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
(That quote’s from Wayne Dyer – and honestly, it couldn’t be more true when it comes to children’s behaviour.)
What Causes A Child To Become Defiant? – One Amazing Truth.
So back to that family…
Once we put connection at the centre, while holding firm, loving boundaries, things changed.
No more chaos. No more walking on eggshells.
The swearing and hitting? Gone within weeks.
Because once their child felt safe and truly heard, he didn’t need to shout to be seen anymore.
I teach parents how to set clear, firm boundaries, maintain high expectations for their children, and confidently take charge, while also building a deeply connected relationship where their child naturally begins to shift their own behaviour.
- It’s not strict, and it’s not permissive.
- It’s not anywhere near the old reward-and-punishment model.
Yes, you can have both.

This is the power of connection – not just love, not just attention, but that specific way of responding that tells your child:
-
You matter.
-
I see you.
-
I’m here.
In fact, it’s so different from what many of us were taught, it’s hard to believe it’s even possible. But if it’s never been modelled for you, how could you know how to do it? Right?
That’s exactly where I come in. I’m here to guide you, show you, and support you, step by step, as you learn a new way that works with your child, not against them.
So if you’re reading this and thinking, “I am loving. I do give attention… but something still isn’t working,”
That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re ready for the next layer.
And I’d love to show you how.
This is what I support parents with every single day – and the transformation is honestly incredible.

What other parents are saying after working with me:
“Camilla was the answer to our prayers. I am endlessly grateful to her and only wish I’d found her sooner.” Louisa, Mum of 2
“Camilla coached us through different methods. Methods which I had never thought about, but gave us incredible results in a very short space of time, methods which we still use now and are so easy to implement on a daily basis. I am no longer the shouty mum I used to be. And my relationship with my kids has changed so much, I often wonder why I hadn’t started this journey sooner.’ Lucy, Mum of 3
“I was stuck in a pretty unpleasant vicious circle, with three awesome small children and was ruining it. I was afraid they would grow up and not trust me. Within the first couple of weeks working with Camilla I saw positive changes.” Claire, Mum of 3
