A Fantastic Powerful Way – How To Deal With An Ungrateful Child

Struggling with How To Deal With An Ungrateful Child? Discover simple, effective ways to turn their behaviour around.

Imagine waking up, ready to tackle the day, only to be greeted by your child’s bubbling excitement—and a dose of frustration.

“Are we going to the big city playground today?” they ask, their eyes sparkling with hope.

“No, we’re heading to the local playground instead. I need to drop off a package at the post office before it closes,” you explain.

Their face falls instantly. With an exaggerated sigh, they declare, “I hate that playground! It’s boring! You ruin everything!”

Later, they ask you to read them a book. You oblige, but it’s not enough. “Why didn’t you read three books?” they grumble.

You can’t help but think, This never ends. Nothing I do seems to be enough!

And it stings. You’ve sacrificed so much—attending their activities, planning trips around their needs, juggling work and family life. Yet, they still seem unhappy, and their attitude is wearing you down.

But what if I told you that your child isn’t the problem?

Stay with me here—this might just change everything.

How To Deal With An Ungrateful Child

Here’s something we don’t often think about: we’ve been taught to look at our child’s behaviour in a not-so-helpful way. We’ve been taught to label and judge our child’s unwanted behaviour as “ungrateful.”

Let me ask you this: how do you feel when you think your child is ungrateful?

  • Stressed?
  • Angry?
  • Frustrated?

And how do you respond?

Our natural reaction is to want to fix that behaviour, right?

We think, I need to teach them to BE grateful! So, we double down on lectures, telling off… or we take away or threaten to take away all of their toys to teach them a lesson.

Yet, the behaviour keeps coming.

At the same time, while we think we’re guiding them, they’re experiencing judgement and misunderstanding.

And what’s a normal human reaction when we feel judged, especially by someone we love? Yes, we get defensive. Maybe we push back, get angry, or act out even more.

Now, what happens next?

As parents, we see this defensive reaction as more evidence that our child is being ungrateful.

So, we get even more frustrated, and the cycle repeats.

It’s easy to fall into this pattern—it’s so common and so human. But when we step back and see what’s really happening, we can break that cycle.

How To Deal With An Ungrateful Child

Let’s take a step back and think about how children see the world.

Children experience the world very differently from adults, and it’s important to understand just how big that difference is.

Let’s say I tell you, “We’re going to the movies.” What comes to mind? You probably think about driving there, parking the car, standing in line for tickets, getting popcorn, and then finding your seat. You know the steps because you’ve experienced it before.

If something doesn’t go to plan—like the popcorn machine is broken—you’ve got the life experience to adapt and move on.

Children, however, live entirely in the moment. When you tell your child, “We’re going to the movies,” they don’t picture all the steps. Instead, they fill in the blanks with their own limited experience. Maybe last time they got a giant bag of sweets or sat in a special seat. In their mind, that is what will happen every time.

When reality doesn’t match their expectations, it can feel confusing or upsetting to them. They don’t yet have the ability to adapt as easily as we do because they haven’t experienced as much.

This is why kids sometimes seem to overreact to small changes—they’re not being ungrateful,  they’re navigating the world in the only way they know how.

Understanding this makes it easier for us to guide them with empathy when things don’t go as they expect.

Parenting An Ungrateful Child

Just because you understand how your child sees the world differently doesn’t mean you have to fix everything for them or change your boundaries.

It’s easy to think, If I just give them what they want, it’ll avoid the meltdown, or Maybe I need to do more so they don’t feel disappointed.

But here’s the thing: your role isn’t to make life perfect for your child—it’s to guide them through the ups and downs while maintaining healthy boundaries.

How to Teach An Ungrateful Child A Lesson

This is where Language of Listening comes in. It’s not about fixing things or giving in; it’s about coaching your child.

Instead of seeing behaviours you don’t like as ungratefulness, view them as your child developing important skills—like flexibility, adaptability, and managing big emotions like disappointment.

You begin with empathy and connection by using “Say What You See” to help your child feel understood. Then, you guide them to handle big emotions like disappointment and coach them to find their own solutions.

For example, if they’re upset about not going to the big playground, you might say: “You were really looking forward to the big playground. It’s your favourite, no wonder you’re disappointed we’re not going today. That’s tough.” (Empathy and connection.)

Then, you problem solve.  “We can’t go today, I wonder what we can do to have fun at the little playground?”

This approach helps your child feel heard and gives them tools to manage their feelings and find solutions.

This way, you stay firm while showing them you understand them—and you avoid the guilt or pressure to always say yes.

At your wit’s end with your child’s behaviour and looking for something that really works? Want a simple, actionable plan that can start making a difference in just a few minutes a day?
