When Your 7 Year Old Says ‘No!’
“My child says “no” all the time! what can I do?” It’s a common question I get from the families I work with.
When your child says “NO!” to everything it can feel absolutely exhausting and frustrating.
It’s like you’re constantly butting heads, with no end in sight, leaving you drained and questioning your parenting choices.
Every day feels like a battle, and the word “NO” becomes the most frequent sound in your household.
When Your 7 Year Old Says ‘No!’

However, once you understand the WHY behind the “No” things start to fall into place, and the constant NO vanishes.
This guide will cover practical strategies to uncover the underlying causes and provide effective solutions to turn those “NOs” into “YESes.”
When Your 7 Year Old Says ‘No!’ Understanding Why your child says No! to everything.
If your child always says “NO,” it’s usually a sign that they’re trying to meet their need for power or connection.
| The need for power: It’s all about having some say and control over what we do and how things happen around us. It’s about having a voice and feeling empowered. – Not about powering over someone.
The need for connection: It’s about feeling like we matter, that we belong, and that we’re heard, validated, and seen. |
Kids need to feel like they have some control over their lives and, at the same time, feel like they matter. When they feel disconnected, like their opinions don’t matter, or they don’t get to make choices, their need for power spikes.
And what’s a quick and easy way to feel powerful? Dig their heels in and saying “NO!”

How to deal with a stubborn 7 year old
When I was stuck in power struggles with my daughter, I didn’t realise that my attempts to change her behaviour were making things worse.
I was trying to change her behaviour without understanding why she was acting out. This only made her feel more disconnected and powerless. No wonder she was always saying “NO!”
In Language of Listening, we talk about how all behaviour is driven by healthy needs. Not all behaviour is healthy, but it’s easier to coach and support our kids when we understand the need they’re trying to meet and help them do it in a healthy way.
| Quick Example of Meeting Needs
Kids try to meet their needs for power and connection in various ways. For example, a child who backchats is often trying to meet their need for connection. They want to be heard, understood and validated but go about it in a not so helpful way. Coaching a child to meet their need for connection in healthy ways would involve listening to them and validating their feelings and experiences and helping them communicate calmly. When a child feels understood and valued, the backchatting often stops on its own because their need for connection is being met in a healthy way. |
What to do when your 7 year old says no to everything
Once I understood that a child’s unwanted behaviour is coming from unmet needs, and that we need to help them meet those needs in healthy ways—not add to their feelings of disconnection and powerlessness. I changed my approach.
Instead of trying to control my daughter with my usual tactics, I focused on reconnecting with her and giving her healthy ways to feel in control. It made a world of difference!
