A Parenting Coach Case Study:
Names have been changed to protect identity.
Are you stuck in a cycle of shouting at your kids and feeling guilty? You’re not alone.
Meet Sarah – a mum who felt like she was constantly losing it. Here’s how working with a UK parenting coach helped her take back control, without resorting to shouting or endless power struggles.
The Shouting Cycle Sarah Couldn’t Escape
Sarah came to me, a master parenting coach. She was exhausted. “I never wanted to be a shouty mum,” she admitted. “But when my kids don’t listen, I just explode. Then I feel awful and swear I won’t do it again… until I do.”
Sound familiar?
Sarah’s frustration wasn’t just about her kids ignoring her.

It went deeper.
Every time her children didn’t listen straight away, it triggered something in her.
She didn’t just feel irritated—she felt unheard and powerless.
And no wonder…
The Real Reason Sarah Felt So Powerless
The way we were raised has a massive effect on how we parent—often without us even realising it. Many of our automatic reactions come from the way we were treated as children. Understanding these patterns with compassion—not self-judgement—is how we create long-term change.
This isn’t about blaming ourselves or thinking we’ve failed. It’s about recognising that the way we react makes perfect sense based on our past experiences—even if we don’t like how we respond now.
Through our parenting coaching sessions, we uncovered something huge:
Growing up, Sarah was never allowed to say “No” to her parents.
As a child, when she tried to say “no,” her own mother would get cross and tell her off. She learned that setting boundaries meant getting into trouble and that standing her ground was seen as disrespectful or even mean.
No wonder she had a hard time setting boundaries with her own kids—no one had ever shown her how. And when her own children tried to set boundaries, she saw it as rude and defiant, triggering those deep-seated feelings of powerlessness.
So when her kids pushed back against her rules, her subconscious went straight back to that powerless little girl who wasn’t allowed a voice. And that’s when the shouting would start.
Once Sarah saw this pattern clearly, everything changed. She realised she wasn’t failing as a mum—she was just stuck in an old loop that she could now break.

Shifting from Managing Behaviour to Becoming a Life Coach for Her Kids
Sarah didn’t need more “stay calm” advice. She needed a way to step into her authority—without fear, without guilt, and without resorting to shouting. That’s where Language of Listening® changed everything.
Instead of trying to control her children’s behaviour, Sarah learned how to coach them through their emotions. She realised that:
-
Kids push back because they need to feel heard.
-
Setting boundaries isn’t about controlling them—it’s about guiding them.
-
Her job wasn’t to “make” them behave but to teach them the skills to handle their own behaviour.
With these shifts, Sarah finally felt in charge—not by demanding obedience, but by guiding her children with confidence.
The Three-Step Shift That Stopped the ShoutingHere’s an overview of the process we used to help Sarah break the cycle. This wasn’t a quick fix—real change takes time. Once Sarah saw the hidden cycles that were keeping her stuck, she was able to replace old ways of responding with new, effective strategies. She felt in charge and capable of holding boundaries. And when we feel confident in our parenting, the shouting naturally stops. This is a process, it’s called Language of Listening® for a reason—it’s a language. The more we use it, the more fluent we become, making positive interactions second nature. 1. SAY WHAT YOU SEE® – Seeing Things Through Her Child’s PerspectiveInstead of snapping, “Why won’t you listen?!” Sarah started with validation. When her daughter refused to put on her shoes, instead of shouting, she said: “You really don’t want to put your shoes on! You’d rather keep playing.” Instantly, her daughter’s resistance dropped. When kids feel heard, they fight less. SAY WHAT YOU SEE® is about more than naming emotions—it’s about stepping into your child’s world and understanding their experience. 2. CAN DOs – Helping Her Kids Find Their Own SolutionsSarah learned to help her kids solve problems within her boundaries. Instead of forcing compliance, she offered choices that empowered them. Instead of demanding, “Hurry up, we’re late!” she said: “We need to leave now AND you want to keep playing. What’s a way you can take something with you?” This shifted her children from resistance to problem-solving, giving them a sense of control while still holding limits. 3. STRENGTHS – Building Confidence Beyond PraiseSarah realised that pointing out her children’s strengths was far more powerful than praise. Instead of “Good job!” she said: “You figured that out all by yourself! You’re great at solving problems.” By focusing on strengths, Sarah helped her kids see themselves as capable, which built lasting confidence and independence. |
The Results: A Calmer, More Confident Mum
Within weeks, Sarah noticed a massive change.
-
Her kids started listening the first time (most of the time!)
-
She felt calm and in control—without the guilt.
-
Her home became a place of connection, not conflict.
Most importantly? Sarah stopped shouting. Not because her kids magically became obedient—but because she no longer felt powerless. She had the tools to lead with confidence.

I am no longer the shouty mum I used to be. And my relationship with my kids has changed so much, I often wonder why I hadn’t started this journey sooner.’ Lucy, Mum of 3
